Gobelins

English version available here

Kaelten: (rires) Je peux comprendre cela.

***

Notes

If you use any kind of addons, chances are your heard the name Curse and Wowmatrix before. You probably also realised that the updaters topic generally a contreversial one and discussions about it often turn into flame wars. While reading on the subject, I quickly realised it was almost impossible to find unbiased informations. For this reason, instead of making a failed attempt at a fair review based on such facts, I decided it would be better to give a chance to each concern party to explain their point of view in an interview.

With this goal in mind, I contacted someone from Curse, I sent messages to Wowmatrix and I also contacted one of the Auctioneer developpers asking for his opinion as addons creator.

This first article is the interview I had with Kaelten from Curse. I decided to publish this one first simply because he was the first to accept my interview offer. On a side note, after 3 messages i’m still waiting to hear back from a Wowmatrix representative. If any of you know someone working at Wowmatrix please let them know i would really like to hear from them.

Evander: Even if I’m only an addon user and never even opened a .lua file, I’ve seen your name quite a few times since I started playing World of Warcraft. Could you tell us a bit about what projects you worked on and what you’re currently working on?

Kaelten: Let’s see I’ve had a series of addons, KC_AutoRepair, KC_EnhancedTrades, KC_PlayerFramePlus, KC_Items, OneBag, OneBank, the other members of the OneBag suite.
I’ve worked on several libraries including confounding the Ace Project. I also work for Curse.com, and run CurseForge and WowAce. Oh, I’m also project lead on the Curse Client, and now work on the Mac version.

Evander: Do you still find time to play the game with all this?

Kaelten: Play?

hehe! No I’ve been in game since Beta, and I do have a 70, and a few chars in the 60s, I’ve never raided, and I’ve yet to see the Lich King content I however have a level 36 with more than 40 days of playtime

Evander: it seems to be like that with many addon authors, it’s almost too bad you don’t see most of the game you work so hard to make better.

Kaelten: Yeah, I’d love to play more, but I don’t enjoy playing alone and as of late I’ve not had a partner.

Evander: now the question everyone is dying to know… what faction do you favour

Kaelten: lol, Alliance, I’ve a few horde characters, but I’ve never gotten about 30 with any of them.

Evander: More seriously, like I told you I wanted to make an article about the 2 mains updaters that are available: the curse client and Wowmatrix. After reading on some forums, every times the subject comes up, it seems to end up the same way: two sides saying the other program is bad and that you should not use it. Can you explain some of the controversy that seems to surround the updaters situation?

Kaelten: I think a lot of it is artificial due to misinformation and other communication issues. But of course such statements are hard to prove to any degree.

What I’ve seen in general is a group of users who prefer Wowmatrix because whatever makes there life easiest is what they want and then there is a group that acknowledge that what they’re doing is wrong and shouldn’t be used. Finally, you have the authors who are upset for various reasons.

I’m doubly sided on this issue as both an addon author and an administrator for some of the largest addons sites out there, not to mention my new role in the Curse Client. Is there any part of the situation you’d like me to elaborate on further?

Evander: Yes and no. I think I’ll get there by asking my next question. Even if you are part of the curse client, and are obviously biased on this situation, why do you think users should choose your updater over Wowmatrix?

Kaelten: Well, in general I tell people to use the updater that best suites their needs. So it’s not so much that I’m out to force everyone to use the Curse Client, but that I know why people shouldn’t use WowMatrix.

They steal bandwidth from Curse, WowInterface and other addon sites to make their client work. That in and of itself tells me I wouldn’t want to use their updater.

They’ve completely ignored author’s wishes from day one, although recently they’re at least putting up a token effort.

They edit files that they install, including QuestHelper and all toc files. I don’t think an updater has any business doing that.

Evander: Let’s pretend I don’t know what you’re talking about, what do you mean stealing bandwidth and not respecting authors wishes?

Kaelten: They don’t host their own files, but instead deep link to various sites around the community. This incurs thousands of dollars of bandwidth bills for the sites they steal from.It also decreases traffic on the pages of the sites, which causes a loss of ad revenues and can hurt the companies performance stats just by virtue of the lost traffic.

All three of those factors contribute to literally, and I’m not exaggerating, to 10s of thousands of dollars in losses on a monthly basis.

When asked to stop they’ve failed to comply. When blocked, they’ve intentionally gone out of their way to circumvent our protections. We aren’t a large company, we don’t have the ability to sustain this level of loss.

Evander: So you’re saying Curse actually tried to stop them from downloading from your site?

Kaelten: several times.

Evander: From what I read, many users seem to think that you never really tried to stop them? Just thinking fast, wouldn’t a CAPTCHA solve the problem?

Kaelten: Of course it would, but in doing so we’d be harming all our legitimate users, we’ve been working desperately to come up with a solution that’d keep things easy for the normal users.

We’ve even gone as far to offer the purchase Wowmatrix, paying them a reasonable fee for the amount of time they’ve spent building their application. They countered with a ridiculous amount.

Evander: If they cost you so much money, why not pay some lawyers in black suits to try and make them stop?

Kaelten: They’re located in jurisdictions that make prosecution difficult, combined with the fact bandwidth stealing is a gray area in many countries to begin with.

Evander: For the players that don’t have ties to either companies, it may look like a war between Curse and Wowmatrix, who pay the bandwidth doesn’t really have an effect on them?

Kaelten: Well it may not have any immediate effects, but on the long term it will. Eventually, we’ll have to do something, because losing thousands of dollars monthly to leeching isn’t a viable strategy. I’m sure most people can see how loosing money isn’t good for long term solvency.

Evander: I think it covers the bandwidth usage, would you like to add something on the subject?

Kaelten: One thing I’d like to cut off now, WowMatrix has told addon authors who’ve contacted them that they offered to pay both us and WowInterface for bandwidth costs, to legitimize their product. In our case this is true, they did offer, but the offer was very low and wouldn’t even cover a fraction of the costs they incur us. As of my last conversation with Cairenn over at WowInterface she was unaware of any such overtures either.

Evander: When asked why not use Wowmatrix you said stealing bandwidth and not respecting authors wishes, can you elaborate some more on the second part?

Kaelten: Several times, when authors would request that their addons be removed from WowMatrix, the requests have been either ignored, or they only half way complied. WowMatrix would remove the links from their site but they would not remove them from the application.

Evander: Do you have any examples?

Kaelten: Let’s see, Ckknight requested a while back for them to remove all his works but they where only removed from the website.

Evander: Ok so all his addons can still be updated with WowMatrix?

Kaelten: Yes. Because they’re not hosting the files themselves, typical responses like dmca letters aren’t very effective.

Evander: Now, I would like to talk about the curse client. I’m a new user, what should i know about the service you are offering?

Kaelten: The Curse Client is designed to give you an easy way of updating and installing addons.
Currently, all users are going through an extended trial offering of our upcoming premium service. Once that trial is over some functionality will be disabled, but not the point of making the application unusable.

Evander: When you say disabling some functions do you have some examples? or on a more positive note what are the advantages of being a premium member?

Kaelten: Premium users will have uncapped bandwidth usage, no ads in the client or on the site, support authors via the Author Rewards Program, updating all addons with one click or even fully automatic updating.

We’re also constantly exploring more ways to give value added options to premium users without overburdening regular users.

Evander: But people will still be able to update with the normal version?

Kaelten: Yes absolutely.

Evander: Did the new Blizzard policy have any effect on your plans? (1)

Kaelten: Not really. We’re not charging for access to addons, not to mention we’re not developing addons.

Evander: You mentioned the Author reward program, what is that?

Kaelten: Along with our upcoming premium program we’re going to launch the Author’s Reward program. A portion of the fees of every premium membership will go towards it. Through it we’ll be giving points to the authors, which can be redeemed for things in the upcoming store.

Currently we’re planning on launching with Amazon.com gift cards as the item, but we hope to expand it into a decent variety. We’re also exploring a way to give some of the larger authors cash in exchange for the points, but that brings into play tax law and the like, so I’m not sure if and when we’ll be able to do so.

Evander: Can we have some more insights as what we should expect from curse in the future or when those services are to be released?

Kaelten: We’ll we’re hoping to have the premium membership and the rewards programs launched very soon. I hate to have dates released because you never know when something will come up to cause a delay, but if all goes well, it’ll be just around the corner.

Evander: is it the same definition of “soon” as Blizzard http://www.wowwiki.com/Soon?

Kaelten: hehe. Well I’d like to convey a sense of urgency with this statement of Soon(tm) but interpretations may vary.

Evander: Now, you say the Curse Client is a great service but many people have said bad thing about it in the past. The most commons is blaming you for virus and bugs. What is your response to those accusations?

Kaelten: Well, there are several responses that I could give.

Ok first, I’ll take this opportunity to point out that an addon, in and of itself can never be a virus as they are just text files. So for an addon to give you a virus, there must be an executable file in there somewhere.

We filter those pretty heavily on CurseForge and WowAce. We spend huge amounts of time and resources to guaranteeing that the downloads we offer are safe.

Since the launch of CurseForge we’ve had only one virus sneak through, and only for a few hours. After publicly apologizing for this we went through and increased security that much more and since then, we’ve had no issues. So this brings me to a point about the client. It will never execute a file in your addon directory.

As far as the client itself, we’d have to be monumentally stupid to poison our userbase by putting any kind of virus in it. We’re here to be a long term service for the community, not to make a quick buck and run. Our update servers are secure, and the ads that will be in the client are all going to be in house self promotions or direct sales. So no flakey ad networks sneaking something in.

Security really is a top concern for us. We have nothing to gain by letting our users be infected with a virus.

Evander: So no gold selling advertising like on the official forums? :P (2)

Kaelten: lol, nope none. We’ve been gold selling free for the last several years, network wide.

If I may say a few words about the virus infection craze in general. I’ve seen a lot of people commenting that “I installed XXXX addon/application and now my account is hacked the next day!” Many of the groups that do go out to compromise accounts don’t act on the information they obtain immediately. It’s much more likely to be something you did 2 or 3 weeks earlier that caused you to be infected.

Also it’s important to only download things like the Curse Client from Curse. There was an incident a while back, where someone uploaded a virus to ui.worldofwar.net under the name Curse Client. It was downloaded by hundreds of people before they removed it.

Right now, the only pages that have the official client releases on are either on Curse.com/client or on it’s project page on CurseForge. Any other download sites I’d not trust. Just like I’d not download something called QuestHelper.exe from some small site.

Bring on the tough questions mate

Evander: Ok, some people claim that the curse updater silently installs a data collection tool for the game database you maintain. Is there any truth to that?

Kaelten: Well there are two parts to this answer.

Older versions of the client would go in and install it without an option to remove it. This was well before I was officially involved in the project. I along with the voices of the community spoke out against it and now we’ve a system in place that’s much better.

When installing, it asks you if you wish for that to be the default behaviour. If you do, anytime a new game is created it has the upload data box checked under manage games. You can later change the default behaviour under the options panel. You can opt out of data collection at any time by unchecking upload data under manage games, hitting save, and removing the profiler.

So, yes the client does install the profiler, and will do so automatically. However, it only does so with your permission and you can opt out at any time.

Evander: Ok this is more of a personal question I never liked using updaters because they tend to botch the job by not uninstalling previous version, is it still the case?

Kaelten: Hehe. When the client installs an addon it follows this process:

1) Move the current addon to a back up directory
2) Move the new copy into your addons directory
3a) if 2 completes successfully then remove the backup copy.
3b) if 2 failed restore the backup

So yes, the addon is completely replaced, and the old copy is completely removed.

Evander: ok but can it still detect when folder names were changed from one version to an other. I’m a big fan of Auctioneer and I can’t count how many people had problems since their updater or them didn’t delete old folders.

Kaelten: I’d have to confirm this, but it should be working properly. If it’s not I’ll be glad to get it fixed for an upcoming release

Evander: but it may be an old problem already fixed, i’m just scared to use an updater again… i can live without a great ui untill i manualy update everything after a patch but i want my auctioneer to be working lol.

Kaelten: lol. I can understand that

it’s also possible to put certain addons on ignore so you can skip over those. That way you can just ignore those and keep them working, while only updating the rest of your ui

Evander: Ok, a wild question now. Are there any plans to make the curse website available in other language? The situation is currently not great for users that don’t speak English. There is French websites that host addons but since authors don’t know about them and only maintain their addon on the main sites (curse, wowui and such) users often end up with outdated versions.

Kaelten: I know it’s on a list of things we’d like to do. We’re currently working towards having curseforge and wowace localizable. Part of the problem is the lack of demand, which is probably generated by the lack of use by non English speakers. So it’s a vicious cycle.

We’re a small company and with limited resources, we have to pick the fights that are the most worthwhile. So while it’s something we’d like to do, there aren’t any immediate plans.

Evander: I think i asked all i could think of, is there any questions you would have like me to ask?

Kaelten: I was hoping for something harder hitting

No I think I got a lot of side points out already and I don’t want this to turn into a soap box
I’m just excited about all the things going on and all that we’re going to be launching soon.

I’d be willing to have a follow up interview to answer any questions you or your readers may have after this one is out.

Evander: this is a great offer.

***

Notes

(1) This question was refering to the changes made to Blizzard’s UI Add-On Development Policy.

(2) This question was refering to the fact the gold sellers ads were shown on one occasion on Blizzard’s official forums. WowInsider covered the subjet in this article.

It is also important to note that this interview was made before Curse and WowInterface blocked Wowmatrix. For more information on this please read the joint official statement. http://www.curse.com/blogs/curse-en-news/archive/2009/04/13/437537.aspx
